TO DO LIST (SATB)(for concert):

  • FIRM UP MEMORIZATION! You sound FANTASTIC! Great rehearsal 10/21! Firm up memorization on Let’s Go Crazy and get those words out. Sing bright (I need attitude) but don’t over-sing or over bright it (we will have to be heard over the band!).  Only You and Unforgettable sound amazing. MEMORIZE ALL!

TO DO LIST (SSAA) (for concert):

  • REMEMBER WHAT WE DID 10/14! Learn to SNAP! (LOL!) We’ll need to listen to balance and blend when we get into the theater. Let me know if you have any problems or questions!

OCTOBEr 14

OCTOBEr 7

SATB, thank you for such a great rehearsal last night! We knocked out a lot of “stuff” I was worried about, and Only You sounds pretty amazing! Unforgettable is coming along and I was relieved we did so well on Let’s Go Crazy (we kicked the “doctor everything’ll be alright” part in the teeth with only a quick review!) We’ll do some more setting of the “staging” (kind of a flash mob idea) next rehearsal (10/21).

SSAA, see you next week! Royals should be completely memorized!!!

TO DO LIST (SSAA) (for next week, 10/14):

  • MEMORIZE ROYALS (ALL)! Once you get that (especially the “gold teeth, Grey Goose, tripping in the bathroom”) part learned, you will also have learned pp. 10-13). Here is the JW Pepper link- click on the “Listen” link to sing along with the SATB version (it will still help!): https://www.jwpepper.com/10466544E.item#/submit

  • We will also hit SILVY next week, so if you get a chance to review the body percussion, that would be great to help move that forward. (For those that did not see, Caroline’s daughter Jayden performed in a women’s choir that did it last Monday at their concert- great job!) Here’s the link to practice the body percussion (check me on this and make sure it’s what we do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTC_zb2LriA, And here is the US Navy Chorale: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY3XxnRtu48 (the arrangement is not exactly the same as ours)

TO DO LIST (SATB)(for 10/21):

  • Review pp. 10-13 for pitches on UNFORGETABLE. Please try to review this especially before rehearsal  just so we don’t forget a lot of what we worked on Monday night. We marked a lot of phrasing- this whole piece needs to be liquid gold, smooth as chocolate…

  • ONLY YOU Memorize ALL (we’ll do more memory singing next time- this sounded GREAT last Monday night!)

  • LET’S GO CRAZY Memorize all (I know I gave you an out last night- I’m taking it away! We can do this!) (we’ll check for memorization!)

  • “Pills and Thrills and Daffodils”- watch rhythm on “daffodils” especially (firm this up some more before next time)

  • SATB, WE WILL REHEARSE 10/21 AND RUN THROUGH 10/28!

EVERYBODY’S SOUNDING REALLY GOOD- KEEP UP THE MOMENTUM! ONLY ONE MORE FULL REHEARSAL FOR EACH GROUP BEFORE CONCERT!

SHORT AND SWEET! Great rehearsals by both groups! Ladies, you are ready to perform! SATB, see you next week- last rehearsal!

TO DO LIST (SATB)(for 10/21):

  • MEMORIZE ALL! Let me know if you have any problems or questions!

TO DO LIST (SSAA) (for concert):

  • REMEMBER WHAT WE DID 10/14! Learn to SNAP! (LOL!) We’ll need to listen to balance and blend when we get into the theater. Let me know if you have any problems or questions!

OCTOBEr 1

SSAA, thanks for the rehearsal last night. REMEMBER: WE ONLY HAVE TWO MORE REHEARSALS BEFORE CONCERT! If you haven’t memorized Royals, you should have received a lyric sheet from me (I still think the notes are fairly easy, but the lyrics trip me up, so I printed off the lyrics- if you need them, they are HERE:

We did review some tricky spots on Royals last night- thanks for those who helped point those out. As you memorize words, be sure and double-check your notes, rhythms, and entrances with the music before 10/14.

Also, here is my Google search for “bring me little water sylvy body percussion tutorial” for those that need it (there are slow ones, fast ones, some with lots of detail- you can choose the ones that work best for you):

https://www.google.com/search?q=bring+me+little+water+sylvie+body+percussion+tutorial&oq=bring+me+little+water+silvy+body&aqs=chrome.3.69i57j0l3.10273j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

SATB, see you Monday night!

TO DO LIST (SATB)(for 10/7):

  • We will choose solos for Unforgettable.

  • Review pp. 10-13 for pitches on UNFORGETABLE. Please try to review this especially before rehearsal 10/7 just so we don’t forget a lot of what we worked on Monday night. We marked a lot of phrasing- this whole piece needs to be liquid gold, smooth as chocolate…

  • ONLY YOU Memorize the bridge and at least verses 1-2  (we’ll do some memory singing next time)

  • Write yourself a note at the start of ONLY YOU to “push tempo” so that we don’t let it drag back (we fixed that at our last rehearsal).

  • LET’S GO CRAZY Memorize all (we’ll check for memorization!)

  • We will firm up the opening and closing

  • Especially practice the bridge (last couple of pages!) and start to get that memorized- all that “Doctor Everthing’ll be alright…” section (especially the rhythm on “Pills and thrills” section

  • SATB, WE WILL REHEARSE 10/7, 10/21, AND RUN THROUGH 10/28!

TO DO LIST (SSAA) (for 10/14):

  • MEMORIZE ROYALS (ALL)! Once you get that (especially the “gold teeth, Grey Goose, tripping in the bathroom”) part learned, you will also have learned pp. 10-13). Here is the JW Pepper link- click on the “Listen” link to sing along with the SATB version (it will still help!): https://www.jwpepper.com/10466544E.item#/submit

  • We will also hit SILVY next week, so if you get a chance to review the body percussion, that would be great to help move that forward.

  • SSAA, WE WILL REHEARSE 10/14 AND 10/28 (hopefully just a run-through)!

SEPTEMBER 23

Thanks, SATB, for your hard work last Monday night- don’t forget what we learned. We will pick solos for “Unforgettable” in our next meeting (Oct. 7).

FYI-we have cancelled the Oct. 12 date Brian mentioned Monday night. Too many conflicts this time. I take responsibility for this and have contacted Brian. I’ll do better next time.

Ladies, I’ll see you next week!

TO DO LIST (SSAA):

  • MEMORIZE ROYALS PAGES 1-7. Once you get that (especially the “gold teeth, Grey Goose, tripping in the bathroom”) part learned, you will also have learned pp. 10-13).

  • We will also hit SILVY next week, so if you get a chance to review the body percussion, that would be great to help move that forward.

TO DO LIST (SATB):

  • Review pp. 10-13 for pitches on UNFORGETABLE. Please try to review this especially before rehearsal 10/7 just so we don’t forget a lot of what we worked on Monday night. We marked a lot of phrasing- this whole piece needs to be liquid gold, smooth as chocolate…

  • ONLY YOU Memorize the bridge and at least 1st verse (we’ll do some memory singing next time)

  • Write yourself a note at the start of ONLY YOU to “push tempo” so that we don’t let it drag back (we fixed that at our last rehearsal).

  • LET’S GO CRAZY Memorize at least the 1st verse and chorus (we’ll check for memorization!)

  • Especially practice the bridge (last couple of pages!) and start to get that memorized- all that “Doctor Everthing’ll be alright…” section (especially the rhythm on “Pills and thrills” section

SATB BONUS- Hey, SATB Variations, check this out! I have the music and want to do it for May! Are you up for the challenge?!?? This will be incredible!!

SEPTEMBER 9

Thanks, Ladies, for another great rehearsal! We found several places of repetition, so we became more familiar with the piece and sang with confidence! We also started working some phrasing and dynamic changes, as well as “spitting” out those words for crispness. And we fixed some rhythmic landmines! Great job!

TO DO LIST (SATB):

  • ONLY YOU Memorize the bridge and at least 1st verse

  • Altos and Basses, be rhythmically crisp and pitch perfect (accurate!) on your accompaniment “bumps”

  • Sopranos and Tenors, make lyrical phrases on the verses

  • LET’S GO CRAZY Memorize at least the 1st verse and chorus

  • Practice the bridge (last couple of pages!) and start to get that memorized- all that “Doctor Everthing’ll be alright…” section (especially the rhythm on “Pills and thrills” section

  • Speed! Practice the parts FAST!

  • ROYALS Memorize the chorus and at least the first verse

  • Phrasing/breathing in the phrases

  • Clean words with lots of consonants

See you all in two weeks- enjoy a little rest next week!

SEPTEMBER 2

OK, SATB-V, we inherited another piece for the November concert, so be sure and give “Unforgettable” several looks before we get together next on September 23rd. MEMORIZATION ON “UNFORGETTABLE” IS NOT REQUIRED. It has some really tight jazz chords that “crunch” a lot, so everyone needs to be firm and confident on their notes without oversinging.

“Let’s Go Crazy” and “Only You” are sounding really good! FOR 9/23: PLEASE HAVE THE FIRST TWO VERSES AND CHORUS OF “LET’S GO CRAZY” MEMORIZED AND THE INTRO, FIRST VERSE, CHORUS, AND BRIDGE ON “ONLY YOU” MEMORIZED. To the extent you can, work with the instrumental track (because I really like that tempo!) on “Let’s Go Crazy” (and remember, let’s “go” crazy, let’s “get” nuts- that’s probably more for me than for any of you!!!). Also, don’t forget the breathing/phrasing marks we made on both songs.

Just a reminder- no Variations rehearsal 9/16. See you all on Monday!

August 26

Thanks, Ladies, for a great rehearsal last night! We got a nice “head start” on Hail Holy Queen and a REALLY good launch on Royals. Just some reminders- tricky spots were: m. 17-27 (repeated m. 43-53); then that bridge section 53-60.

As your work on MEMORIZING Royals, keep counting and rhythm first and foremost! The notes are there- we just need to make sure they are “sync-ed” in time across the ensemble. PLUS- I would love to add some type of either body percussion or real percussion rhythms in the background- more than just the “snaps” indicated on the page (but practice those first!) And, finally, as the memorization/familiarity with the piece becomes known, start throwing in that all-important “attitude” for this song!

Thanks for your reading of How Can I Keep From Singing- this one will go in the performance area soon- not difficult but keep it familiar!

Ladies, our next SSAA rehearsal will be Sept. 9th!

SATB VARIATIONS- see you next Monday night (Sept. 2nd)- start memorizing “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Only You;” I’ll spend the bulk of the time next Monday on those but will also look at “Yellow Submarine” and “America the Beautiful” plus we may have some new music for you! WOOHOO!

See you all next week at rehearsal! Memorize, memorize, MEMORIZE!

August 19

Thanks for the great SATB rehearsal last Monday night. I think we were all a little “brain-dead” after such a great first CCC rehearsal yet we still got a ton of work done on both “Let’s Get Crazy” and “Only You.” (If you don’t think we were all brain-dead, just remember the “nuts” discussion on “Let’s Go Crazy!”)

And if nothing else makes you “go crazy,” this one will: We need to memorize both songs!! (Ladies, I’ll be telling you the same next week.) Let’s shoot for having at least the first verse & chorus to both songs memorized by our next rehearsal (SATB, 9/2; SSAA, 9/9). More on why later (seriously… I think you know why, but…)

If you have not listened to The Flying Pickets sing “Only You,” check it out here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgDKtLPp46s

It’s a very percussive, rhythmic piece (can you hear the simple beatbox/finger snap pattern in there?), so we especially need to be very clean rhythmically with basses/altos and the nice lyrical contrast of the melody with sopranos/tenors. We’ll talk in two more weeks about breathing spots, dynamics, etc. to help clean that up even more. (And if anyone wants to volunteer to beatbox/finger snap, let me know…!)

Here is the Instrumental Version of “Let’s Go Crazy”, so you can get a good idea of what we should do. If you sing with it, start around the 50-51 second mark- you can finish it all out from there. We hammered out all the notes last night, but are not near up to tempo- listening to the Instrumental Version will get you to tempo (and you’ll need to really “spit out the words” cleanly on this one). Don’t forget the rhythmic edits we made to the chorus (syncopation, short notes—that’s all I’ll say about that!!!) Practice moving it up to tempo with the recording and making the transitions quickly. Look for that recording in Dropbox!

Next week (August 26) is SSAA Variations only; we’ll mainly hit Hail Holy Queen and Royals, but make look at a couple of other pieces. The September 2nd rehearsal will be SATB again.

See you next week!
